The blurb on this book’s dust jacket flap cautions that it portrays great wealth and is therefore not “likely to meet with the whole-hearted approval of the left-wing intellectual.” Translation: the book is readable and fun. First published in 1957, it is a sensational drawing room murder mystery based upon fact, but it is fact of the “truth is stranger than fiction” variety. It is the story of Nichols’ friends Dorothy and Geoffrey Hart who lived and entertained lavishly at their Sussex home, Wych Cross Place. The detective in the story is based upon the author himself.
