Many novels begin well but fall short at the end.... This is particularly true of mysteries. The Murderer of Sleep impressed me as the reverse of this. It starts off confusingly, and for about two-thirds of the story I was constantly trying to remember the salient plot elements. Despite interesting scenes it had a halting quality. Things pick up near the end, however, and the climax and denouement are intellectually and dramatically satisfying. The culprit's method of escaping detection is most ingenious.
