Rex is an excellent hero – intelligent and determined, with just enough fear and self-doubt to make the reader will him to succeed. An eclectic and somewhat scary character list constantly keeps the reader wondering exactly who is good and who is not. In fact, it soon becomes clear that other than Rex, very few people in this dark tale are who they appear to be. Lively prose and a story full of greed, treachery and revenge ensure that Higgins’ latest dark tale will not disappoint. I highly recommend this excellent and thrilling page-turner for ages 9–12 – a book that keeps the reader guessing right to the end.
