Charles Whiting's book 'The Long March on Rome: The Forgotten War' focuses on the invasion of Sicily and the Italian Campaign - particularly Anzio and the march to Rome. Whiting gives the reader a very good insight into the lives of the fighting men (from all nationalities that took part) much more than just a historical, chronological report. He includes the disastrous, fatal and covered-up Allied mustard-gas incident in Bari, the rampart outbreak of venereal disease after the capture of Naples, the behaviour of deserters, blackmarketeers and POW escapees, and of course the atrocious and demoralizing conditions and battles faced by the men on the front lines. This book mentions Audie Murphy and quotes him throughout the book . Quotes can be found on pp. 22, 23, 34, 40-41, 86, 104, 135, 137, 147, and 150.
