Three Japanese kids, Yamashita, Kiyama and Kawabe (the latter being the narrator), are interested in watching an old man who it appears will die soon, just to know how it is to die. Thus starts their relationship with the old man, as they decide to help him regain the joy of living, while they in their turn learn what they are not taught in school: the value of human life and its continuity after death: “We have a friend,” ¬they will say years later¬ “who cares for us from yonder.” A delightful novel for young people, which through simple everyday observations teaches one to discover things transcendent: the immortality of the soul, hence surpassing the ancient Japanese culture.
