Mix butterflies and a ‘hairy-backed forest hog’, eyeballs, riddles and a harpsichord; add a cast of bizarre, colourful characters and the reader gets a great story. Hector Fitzbaudly believes that Gulliver Truepin aka Baron Bovrik de Vandolin is responsible for his father’s death and he plots a dreadful toxic revenge. Hector’s quest for retribution brings him to a mansion, Withypitts Hall. The scene is set for a very memorable Midwinter Feast but will Hector’s revenge be as sweet as he thinks it will be?
The author creates a world where location and time is undefined. The plot is very inventive and the astute reader may pick up clues along the way. The language is rich and challenging, as it contains some Latin terminology, especially in the letters from Hector to Polly but it is not off-putting for the reader. Hector is an expert riddle maker and this adds another element of interest (the riddles are explained at the end of the story).
This is an unusual book and is the third title in an interconnecting set of stories where characters, from previous books, appear briefly and the challenge for the reader is to recognise the character. A very rewarding read for the committed reader in upper primary school.
