I won’t beat about the bush – I loved this book. Dark, witty and intriguing, FE Higgins’s thrilling debut is a brilliantly original tale with the wicked humour and macabre tone of a Tim Burton movie. —The story is told from remnants of the diary of Ludlow Fitch, a young boy with a shadowy past, who escapes from the foul and squalid City to the remote mountain village of Pagus Parvus. He quickly discovers he’s not the only newcomer – a mysterious pawnbroker by the name of Joe Zabbidou has arrived to buy people’s secrets and he quickly enlists Ludlow as his apprentice. Together they unearth more than a few skeletons, and bring hope to the people of Pagus Parvus, but Jeremiah Ratchet, the slimy local landlord, has other plans.
Everything about this book made me love it. From the first page the reader is thrown into the pot with Ludlow’s nasty thrills and close shaves. The tone is one of shrouded mystery and distrust. The entire village is in Ratchet’s debt, and you can feel the paranoia as each villager looks out for him- or herself, hoping to get one up on their neighbours. The idea of buying secrets is ingenious, and the confessions are deliciously horrible. The characters are brilliant and credible – seedy or troubled, wicked or kind – they are all flawed humans, and their weird and wonderful names often cleverly reflect their nature.
