In this book the theory of the irreducible unitary representations of the Poincare group is developed in relation to its quantum mechanical applications. My purposes are twofold. In taking this route to the study of relativistic quantum mechanics, the state vectors play a preponderant role. The Hilbert space of states occurs as a representation space for the unitary operators representing the elements of the Poincare group. The introduction of operators is made in this Hilbert space. This is in contrast to field theoretical approaches where a Lagrangian is assumed, field equations and commutation rules follow, and only then does one hunt for a space of states. I believe that the study of quantum mechanics from the point of view of the state vectors is conceptually simpler than the approach that emphasizes the operators.
