This is a superb crime fiction/novel . The different way it is laid out stops that too familiar ' collecting evidence ennui ' . The different characters are ruthlessly laid bare and the drabness and fear of the war time setting is all too grim .

There is also humour and wonderful digs at the dire British food on offer . It is such a shame that he only wrote 3 crime books but this is a triumph for reissuing . Tiny gripe that such a quintessentially British book has sidewalk and railroad put in for the US market . I am sure that all discerning US readers would know at once what a pavement was!!
