Solzhenitsyn. A Soul in Exile
Joseph PearceInteresting biography of Solzhenitsyn, with the added value of containing material from several interviews that the Nobel Prize winner granted to the author. As Solzhenitsyn did not give interviews, and always rejected the idea of writing a biography, this fact is quite extraordinary; perhaps one possible explanation is that Pearce tackles biographies from a deeply moral view: sometimes, rather than worrying about thorough descriptions of a life, his interest is to point out the authors' thoughts, beliefs, values... and the way that their inner world is reflected in their works. Perhaps this is what moved the great Russian writer to talk to him, to explain his ideas, and relate them to his work; a confidence that was apparently approved of by Solzhenitsyn’s family. Anyone who has read other biographies by Pearce (eg Chesterton or Oscar Wilde) already knows what to expect here. Only, in this case, the interpretation of the thoughts and works of Solzhenitsyn are endorsed not only by the personal research of the author (who also contrasts the information he receives and avoids hagiography), but also by the very words of the Russian.
