"L'Amour" commences with the key action that made this whole novel possible: A Muslim man, slightly more "liberal" than his contemporaries, decides that his daughters deserve a proper education, more so than a memorization of the Koran, and so breaks tradition, and sends his daughters to school. Much later in the novel, she relates another key vignette that underscored the basic humanity and "liberal" nature of her father. Facially, it is a trivial act: her father, while on a teaching assignment in another town, sends her mother a postcard. But for a husband to address a postcard to his wife, using her actual name, is simply not done in that society at the time, and so it was a bold proclamation, via the postman who would deliver the card, to the entire village, that their marital relationship would not fully conform to the dictates of the dead hand of tradition
