A novel based on the story of a real character, the son of a German shepherd, a student of theology who had to flee to the United States in the late 30s because of religious persecution. The author, already famous thanks to a short epistolary novel, Address Unknown, published this novel in 1942 as an interesting testimony on the rise of Nazism and its impact on religious life. It may be perhaps among the most beautiful stories of the Protestant resistance, realized by few individuals rather than established groups.
